The 2023 SBGC Club Championships was completed in near perfect condition on Sunday the 15th October 2023.
It was always thought, that the Men’s A Grade Club Championships would go down to a thrilling finale and indeed this was the case.
Overnight leader Rod Wehrle had a final round dominated by bad bounces and bad luck and whilst still in contention, had to be content with watching his competitors fight it out for the title.
Defending Champion Jamie Stephen fought all the way to the end in the penultimate group to finish just one shot shy. Jamie had several missed putts during his round but conceded in his gracious speech that it was easier to lose a Club Championships than it was to win.
Liam Gocher had a fantastic tournament and was equal leader with nine holes to play. A three putt on 14th from just behind the hole didn’t help but he bounced back with birdie on 15. Liam also thrilled the crowd with hitting the 18th with his second shot setting up an eagle chance from 4 metres which he glided past the hole and eventually made birdie.
Sean Herden played steady golf all day and the highlight was his approach to the 18th under enormous pressure from 70 metres. He hit his shot to 1 metre setting up an easy two putt victory.
The course was in spectacular condition and congratulations to Andrew Banning and his team for the presentation of the course. To Jason and the Pro Shop team, the event was conducted perfectly once again. See you in 2024.
