How fast has this year gone? Christmas is upon us, as is the end of our golfing year. November has been another busy month for our members, with many achievements and reasons to celebrate.
We celebrated the lovely Vanessa Arndell’s 80th Birthday this month in true Shelly Beach style, with a delicious cake and kind words from Vanessa’s friend Heather Mertell.
The excellent conditions on Wednesday 14th, saw a plethora of plus 40 scores, with 21 members in this category. The course was in pristine order, the weather was perfect and produced some amazing scores; notably 3 ladies with 46 points: Moira Shoveller, Julie Phillpot and Gloria Boyd-Skinner! Sonia Haggerty must have felt duped when she came in with 44 points.
On the touring front, we were in the winners’ circle at the annual CCWGA District Championships. Jill Macpherson won the Daily Division 1 Stableford, Jude Tarran continued her great form winning the Day 1 scratch, Kim Burke was runner up in the 36-hole gross Division 1, Jude and Kim came 3rd in the overall 2 Ball aggregate event and Pam Johnston was 3rd overall and 4th in the Division 2 daily event. Congratulations to all. Yvonne Bean has claimed the 70+ scratch event in the week-long Australian Vets Championships, played on courses in the beautiful Port Stephens area. This is an outstanding result for Yvonne, bravo!
The strength of our membership was highlighted at the recent AGM; when Susan Eastway was successful in her bid for a place on the Shelly Beach Golf Club Board. This is a testament to Susan’s commitment to our club, as well as her strong standing in our golfing community; congratulations Susan.
Another highlight from the AGM was the announcement of Kim Burke’s induction as a Gold Member. This well-deserved accolade is in recognition of Kim’s incredible commitment to golf both on and off the course. We are very fortunate to have Kim as a mentor to so many, sharing her experience and knowledge with all. Congratulations Kim, we are so pleased for you.
Our last fundraising event of the year was a huge success. Thank you to all our members who donated to our Mega Raffle (the table was absolutely groaning) and to Gai Palmer for her beautiful hand painted vase for the auction. Because of the generosity of everyone who purchased tickets and those winning bidders on our auction items, we raised over $1,500 for Rose Cottage at Wyong. This is the CCWGA chosen charity for next year, and a very worthy charity it is, supporting those affected by domestic violence.
The last two events on our calendar will be the Gala Day and Annual Presentation being held 5 December and our Christmas Party Friday 7 December. Get your teams together and your Christmas outfits out of the wardrobe for what is always a fun day.
The Ladies Volkswagen Scramble will be held next year on Wednesday 30 January. This is the last day of our Summer Comp and should attract a great number of players. To register your team of 4 for this fun event, go to www.scramble.com.au, the menu will take you to the schedule, click on 2019, January, where you will find Shelly Beach at the bottom of the page. If you have any trouble, our friendly staff in the pro shop will be happy to help.
Sending our thoughts to Colleen Healey who has fractured her wrist. Hope to see you back golfing very soon.
Wishing you all a joyous festive season.
